When Pepper Winters picked a title of Destroyed little did she know it would be more than just a book title! This book literally destroyed me! Here it is three days later and I am still thinking about this book and how I KNOW my review will never do it justice! It’s just one of those books that grabs a hold of your insides while you are reading and holds tight long after you have stopped. I thought Ms. Winters blew me away with Tears of Tess and Quintessentially Q, but with Destroyed, I truly felt she dug deeper and just drew me into the story and I never wanted it to end. I wanted to stay with Fox and Zel for as long as I could. Their story is nothing but tragic, but I didn’t care. I wanted to be right with them every step of the way. It takes a master of her craft to do that and I have to say BRAVO to Pepper Winters for accomplishing just that. She has a talent for taking these damaged hero and heroines and making me love them. I don’t understand how she does it, but she does!
Hazel (Zel) Hunter has not had an easy life. She is a product of countless foster care homes and has been on her own since she could remember. She’s been abused physically in the past and now with an eight year old daughter fighting for her own life, she isn’t about to put up with any one’s crap. She is a fighter and does what she can to get by. Roan Averin aka Fox is the epitome of pure alpha male. I wanted to hate him. I really did… I tried. But I couldn’t. At a young age, he was taken from his home and forced into a life most would no one could image. He was to be trained as an elite assassin, a highly trained killing machine. He was programed to turn off his emotion. All that mattered was the task at hand, to kill. Their paths cross at the fight club Fox owns. With the training he has had, Fox does not do physical contact or have any relationships. He uses marital arts and fighting as a form of release. His only form of release. Until he meets Zel, she changes everything.
Even with Fox’s violent tendencies, Zel is drawn to him. She feels the need to help him, to work past the training that was programed. She knows that inside lies the man he was meant to be before he was forced into his training. She sees what nobody sees.
When all hope is lost for Zel and Fox, a chance encounter with Clara, Zel’s daughter, throws Fox into a world he never saw. This small child does not see Fox for the monster that everyone sees. There is something about Clara that Fox is drawn to. He instantly sees that this child holds a special place in his heart that no one was able to penetrate. When it appears that Clara is the key to releasing the hold on him, tragedy strikes again and sends Fox further into darkness.
Will this tragedy finally break Fox past the point of no coming back? Can Zel lead him out of the darkness and show him the life and love that he deserves? It’s a heartbreaking tale of unimaginable angst and heartbreak that EVERYONE needs to read. 5 stars is not even close to how amazing this book is. It truly is one of THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR!

She sees sides to him that are such the contrast to what he displays but Fox is convinced there is no good in him. He exists to kill.
