James stared at Eloise, brave, proud, innocent Eloise. He could relate to the passion in her plea. He had a sudden desire to be released from a betrothal himself. He fiddled with the corner of his napkin. “There is always the chance your betrothed won’t care if you’re ruined.” Some men did not.

Her lashes fluttered. When they rose again, there was a look in her eye that sent lust coursing down his spine. It settled in his cock. “If I’m to be married to a bilious flounder of a man for the rest of my life, I should like to know passion just once. Just once, James.”

“J-just once?” His voice cracked.

Her smile blossomed. “Perhaps more than once.”

He had to laugh, although this was clearly no laughing matter. “My dear. I would be happy to oblige.”

“Excellent!” She clapped her hands with glee.

Unfortunate, that, because it made her look, once again, like a little girl. But then she picked up her cup and ran her pink tongue around the rim, lapping at the wayward drops. He reached for the second bottle.

She held out her cup for a refill. “You will need to show me what to do.”

He almost forgot to stop pouring. Hell yes. He’d love to show her what to do. He’d love to instruct her—in elaborate detail—what, precisely, to do. Something snarled in his belly. His palm itched.

He forced down that decadent desire. Chained the beast.

For God’s sake. She was an innocent, a virgin. If he opened with that card, not only would she truly be ruined, she would probably hie off to the nearest nunnery and spend the remainder of her life in seclusion.

I was lucky enough to be approved by Netgalley to read it. I’m so glad I did. I’m going to go back and read her other books that I haven't read, though, I know this book is very unique in and of itself.

I’ve never read a book that had a whole other book inside it’s covers. We start out meeting Emiline. In the book it doesn’t come out and say she’s settle but I feel as though she’s settled for her life. After having a hard childhood and losing her once in a lifetime love she’s settled for the adjunct teaching position rather than striving to write her novel. She’s settled for a seven-year monotone relationship with Trevor who’s now an armchair quarterback because of an injury that took him out of football. She’s often thought of that love of a lifetime, Jase. Where is he, what’s he doing, is he happy? You know all the questions we ask about past loves but continue to move and strive for the best and happiness.

Her roommate Cara comes in going on and on about this phenomenal book that she just happened to find an advertisement about in her mailbox. They talk about the infamous author J. Colby and Cara pushes the book on Cara, telling her she has to read it. Everyone is talking about this being the book of the year, you just have to read it. So Emilene decides to read it, if for nothing else, just to see what all the hoopla is about. What she finds inside the cover of All the Roads Between is her life story including her bad childhood, going into foster care, and that lifetime love, Jase. But wait. The only way that her story could be put in a book that she didn’t write would be if he wrote it. Without her permission. Huh, she doesn’t know what to think; all their childhood they both spoke of writing a novel but she always expected to write her own not to find her thoughts, feelings, vulnerabilities, and fears written by someone else, even if it was written by Jase.

Swear on This Life is the present tense and the past is written in All the Roads Between; we actually read J. Colby’s book and experience the past as he and Emi lived it. Granted, the names are changed but the words are truth. Reading about childhood friends who grow into lovers and then are separated by extenuating circumstances.

The purity and rawness of first love is absolutely beautiful and breathtaking but watching it end hurts and ruins us just as much as it does the characters.
Swear on This Life is a friends to lovers, second chance romance but IT IS SO MUCH MORE. It’s so in depth, so tangible, and causes one to do some soul searching. This is by far one of my top reads of 2016.

It’s going to be hard to write a review without telling you the who’s, the how’s, and more importantly the why’s. I’ve ugly cried reading before – mostly CoHo books but this book was more than an ugly cry. I couldn’t catch my breath but I couldn’t stop reading either.

I didn’t read the blurb, I didn’t read a review, I didn’t participate in any reading groups. I went in completely blind. This story is so compelling, so real, and potentially life changing. You start out in this place of calm, cute first encounters, and the possibility of happiness and then Colleen Hoover being the evil genius she is, takes our happiness, twists it into something dark and vicious, and destroys our hearts.

We meet Lily, we meet Ryle, and then we meet Atlas. We know Lily is kick ass. We know Ryle is a hard worker. We know that Atlas stole Lily’s heart as a young girl but that was years ago. This isn’t a love triangle. It’s not all hearts, rainbows, and unicorns. We all know love is hard; it’s difficult at times. But how we handle those difficult moments can define us and our relationships for the rest of our lives.

I am not going to give you any pertinent information except this: devote a whole day to this book, another couple days for the hangover that’s sure to come. Be ready for a blindside. Be prepared for the ugliest, snottiest, and most heart breaking cry you’ll ever encounter while reading a book. Be fully prepared to hurt and be prepared to pick up the thousands of pieces of your heart to begin the healing process. Always, I mean always, remember – “We’re all just people who sometimes do bad things”.
