BLOG TOUR AND REVIEW: FALL OF KNIGHT BY STEVE CROSS

A normal teenager Dean Knight is not.

With a mental illness that threatens to take over his sanity; a sister who’s deep in her own problems; and a wasted mother who couldn’t care less about it all, Dean is left to battle real life on his own. School, bullies and medications are his realities.

Then there are also the ghosts, the hallucinations and of course – the monster.

In the middle of it all, when everything seems to lose purpose, hope comes shining down on Dean’s miserable life. Her name is Ella and for one reason or another, she actually wants to be close to Dean. With Ella’s help, the lost teenage boy decides that he could finally win a battle or two – both in real life and in his writing.

But hope is a tricky thing. And the monster seems to know that.

When secrets buried down for almost a decade come out in the open, what do you do?

BECKY'S REVIEW:

Where do I start? First, this book is AMAZING. I normally don't rate books very high that deal with mental issues because they don't make me feel anything.. However, Steven Cross had me feeling every word!! Fall of Knight is one of those books that once you start it all other aspects of your life go on hold until you have finished it.
I have dealt with many, MANY mental issues both with my work life and my family life. I feel like this gives you a realistic look at what the world is really like for someone suffering from Mental Illness. It is an uncomfortable subject just because no one wants to talk about it. However, you are thrown right in without a lifeline and you just keep swimming until you have finished. I was refreshed with the way he wrote about such an unsettling subject. I finished this book a week ago and still have trouble putting together the words that would create a review that would do Fall of Knight justice. Steven Cross classifies this book as Young Adult but I think it's in a class all its own.. It's got just the right amount of "pretty" that offsets the "dark".

Dean Knight is not your typical carefree and outgoing teenage boy. He suffers from a diagnosis of a mental disease called bipolar. But is he really? No one gets him because simply no one understands him or his disease. He is bullied, picked on, made fun of (however you want to say it) and because of this AND his monsters, life is anything but normal for him. He changes when he meets Ella in more ways than one.

Cross has so brilliantly wrote a novel that I could literally feel every emotion. I thought I was in every scene. I was pissed, happy, sad, depressed, enlightened etc... If you read one book this year about mental illness, THIS has to be the one!!

EXCERPT:

No one answers when I pound again, so I
try the knob. It turns and the door screeches open.
            “Hello!” I
call out as I poke my head in. I don’t see anyone, and I once again fight the
urge to turn around and walk back out the door. Lou could be lying on the floor
bleeding somewhere or convulsing from an overdose. I take a deep breath and
step inside the trailer.
            “Lou! Anyone
home!”
            The trailer
is a single wide, so it isn’t very big. When you open the front door, you are
in the living room, which is right next to a tiny kitchen. Down one hall is a
bedroom. First, I survey the living room and kitchen and don’t see anything
unusual. I walk past the kitchen toward one of the bedrooms. As I step closer
to it, my heart thumps wildly. The bedroom door is closed, but I can hear
muffled head-banging music, as if someone is listening to it through headphones
at two hundred decibels, and I sigh with relief. I open the door. No Lou, but
an MP3 player hooked to ear buds lies on the bed.
            There might
be a bathroom down the opposite hallway. Again, my heart thuds as I approach
two doors, one on the right, a bathroom no doubt. I pause and look down. No
pool of blood seeps from under the door. I grab the door handle, find it
unlocked, and jerk it open. The bathroom is empty too. It’s dirtier than a
public toilet at a crack house, and I feel like I want to throw up.
Quickly, I close the door. The last
bedroom is all that remains. I don’t think he’s in there, but I check it
anyway. As I suspect, the room is empty. This must be the master bedroom where
Lou’s keepers live.
            I still
can’t fully shake my feeling of dread, but then I think Lou was probably just
late to school, and while I was traipsing through the woods, he probably went
on to school, and at this very moment, he and Ella are laughing their asses
off.
            I laugh a
little too, but I also feel good about myself in another way. The old Dean
wouldn’t have been too concerned with anyone else. I guess you could say the
new Dean has learned to make a few friends. I realize how tired I really am
from not only the walk but also the unbearable tension I have felt from thinking
my friend is dead.
            I sit on
the couch―a little reluctantly because it’s pretty dirty, but then again our
couch is secondhand, so I can’t be judging other people’s possessions. I think
about how ridiculous I feel, and then I laugh aloud again.
            I start to
leave, but something outside the window catches my eye.
            I stare for
a long time, feeling unsure.
            Lou swings
from a tree outside the window; he’s hanged himself with an electrical cord.

Steve Cross’s first successful writing project was a play about a werewolf that his eighth grade English class performed. Though the play was never published, the warm fuzzy feeling from its public performance has never quite left Cross, who continues to sink his teeth into a variety of writing projects. His first publication was a haiku, followed by two middle grade novels published by POD publishers and a young adult novel published by Buck’s County Publishing.

A fanatical St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan; a lover of all kinds of YA fiction, as well as the writings of Dean Koontz and Stephen King; a fan of all kinds of music – from Abba to the Zac Brown band, Cross dreams of the day he will write a best-selling novel or sell a screenplay for seven figures, so he can retire and write more best-selling fiction.  Until that day, he and his wife Jean, Missourians born and bred, will continue to toil in the field of education and live in peace with their two dogs and two cats and wait around until their daughter Megan and son-in-law Sean give them grandchildren to spoil.

EXCERPT
Prologue – Cameron
I’d always heard that your entire life flashes before your eyes right before you die. Now, I can honestly say that it’s true. Well, almost true. It’s more like your mind flips through a mental photo album of all the things you’d done and the people you’d met—a birthday party, the first time you drove, someone’s face when you told them they’d never be as pretty as you, your mother’s reprimanding glare when you didn’t win the pageant title you were supposed to, you as a little girl waiting on the front steps for your father to come home—it’s all there. The good, the bad, the ugly. All of it.

You can try to focus on the good—like the face of the person you loved—but it’s no use. Whether you want to or not, you see it all. It must be God’s way of letting you see what he saw so you aren’t surprised when you end up on the other side in Hell. Which is exactly where I’d assumed I’d just booked a first class ticket too.

I was too weak to fight it—to argue that I was in fact a good person—once the storm decided that I was going to be one of its victims, there was nothing I could do but try to hold on to the face of the one person I was sure I’d never see again.

Served me right. I shouldn’t have waited to tell him how I felt. I should have told him the moment I felt it. The moment I realized that despite what I’d done in my past, I was a better person just for loving him.

As the darkness and quiet started to surround me, I knew that it was too late to beg for forgiveness now. Instead, I just closed my eyes and prayed for mercy.

Description:
Sometimes you can’t see the storm coming until it’s too late...

Severe Storm Warning Tip #1:

Be alert to changing weather conditions. Look for approaching storms.

Severe Storm Warning Tip #2:

If you see approaching storms or any of the danger signs, be prepared to take shelter immediately.

Severe Storm Warning Tip #3:

They may strike quickly, with little or no warning.

Situated just outside of Oklahoma City, Calumet County is divided into two drastically different communities: Hope’s Grove and Summit Bluffs. One is the small backward town where dirt roads lead the way to field parties and railroad tracks. And the other, a sprawling suburb where paved drives lead to the landscaped lawns of the wealthy and over privileged.

For five teenagers smack in the middle of Tornado Alley, summer is heating up fast. The winds of change are blurring the invisible line that divides the rich and the rural.

One has a secret.

One has a crush.

One has been lying.

One will get caught.

And one might not make it out alive.

They’re from two different worlds…but one summer is about to change everything.

Series info:

Whether you believe in destiny, divine intervention, or just plain ol' dumb luck, several things happened in 2013 that caused E. Lee and C. Quinn's paths to cross. It may have been that the stars aligned perfectly, or the fact anytime Luke Bryan was mentioned on a social media site both of them were tagged, or maybe it was just that their small town roots and country girl attitudes were magnetically drawn together—calling out to one another, “Y'all should write a book!” Despite geography keeping them apart—Lee in Illinois and Quinn in Alabama—they did. Thanks to three-hour phone calls, ridiculous amounts of online chats, and umpteen Google Docs—Storm Warning is the first book in their edgy new Young Adult series, Broken Heartland.

Author Bios:

Born and raised in the middle of a Midwestern cornfield (not literally, that would be weird), I’ve spent my entire life imagining stories. Stories where the right guy always gets the right girl, first kisses are as magical as they are on the big screen and anything is completely possible if you believe.

Although this journey began years ago, it recently took on a whole new life. After years of devouring hundreds of Romance, YA and New Adult novels, I had an epiphany... I should write a book. And I did it!

If I’m not reading, writing, enjoying drinks with my amazing group of girlfriends or chasing around a sarcastically funny kid, I’m probably watching television shows that were created for teenagers, while my husband teases that I’m too old to watch them.

Exceprt from Love Untouched
Kieran

I advanced on her, inched closer, until she was leaning against her car. I slowly grabbed a fistful of her silky strands ofhair and she turned her gaze on me. She bit her lip and that action just undid me. “I’ll be there for breakfast tomorrow. But right now, I think I need something else.”
Her breath hitched and her bottom lip started quivering slightly. She was nervous. If Brynn played poker, this would be her tell. “What do you need?”
“I need a kiss to go,” I said quickly before I covered her mouth with mine. God, she tasted good. She tasted minty, fresh, and all woman. Her vanilla scent assailed me.
For weeks, I’ve been wondering what she tasted like. Every time she took a sip of that hot cocoa that she liked so much, I found myself wanting to be the lid of the cup. When she smiled and lowered her eyelashes, it hit me straight in the gut, and there were numerous times that I went home and became very friendly with my fists. We didn’t talk during the day, and when she was off work, I wanted her to make the first move and ask about hanging out with me. She never did. She spent a lot of time with her brother, and I didn’t want to impose on their time. Plus, Milo and I didn’t get along. So, I waited for her to make the first step. I still had a difficult time accepting the fact that she was Milo’s sister, but her presence made me forget that she was. I knew I would have to deal with the fact that she was his sister, and one day, if we became something more, I’d have no choice but to let him know about us. Just for now, though, I wanted to feel her lips against mine. She licked her lips that were oh-so-soft and I wanted more. I didn’t just want a kiss to go. I wanted to kiss her in a way that she would ask me to stay.
“What are we doing Kieran?” she asked huskily, slightlypulling away.
I pressed my mouth against hers and ran my tongue over her bottom lip. “We’re meeting up for breakfast.”

EXCERPT:

“Are you okay?” Lauren says.
I look at her and realize that I have a waterfall of tears spilling down my cheeks and into my lap, “No, Lauren, I’m not.”
She gets up, comes to my side and hugs me, “It’s okay Lilly! He’s probably still kind of drunk or something. Maybe he was still really worried from not knowing where you were last night. There are a whole lot of reasons as to why he’s acting like he is. Maybe he’s nervous for classes to start, and he feels like he has to do really well or something?”
I listen to her give me every excuse she can think of, and I welcome the relief I feel from her words. She’s probably right. He’s must be stressing about a lot of things right now and just doesn’t know how to deal with those feelings. Tomorrow I’ll call him and plan a time for us to meet up and have a civilized conversation. Surely by tomorrow he will have calmed down enough that he’s back to normal. I embrace Lauren’s excuses for him. Tomorrow we’ll talk. I’ll explain how I feel, and he will feel horrible for making me feel that way. We’ll kiss and make up. I give Lauren a placid smile and wipe the last of my tears away.
“Thanks Lauren, you’re right. It’s probably nothing serious.”
She gives an encouraging smile, “Of course I’m right! Now may I go back to my nap?” she asks.
I laugh and gesture to her bed, “By all means.”

She falls into her bed and turns onto her stomach. Moments later I hear her heavy breathing. Thank God I have Lauren to talk some sense into me. Of course Sander loves me.  He’s just going through something. We will get through it, no doubt about it.

JENNIFER D.'S REVIEW

When I saw this blog tour sign up I was soooo excited to read and review it.  I have been watching Ms Lane’s page and have been so excited about this book!  I was not disappointed!  This was a great debut coming of age novel.  The cover also grabbed my attention!   That cover model is gorgeous!  Just made me want to read it more!  The author takes us on a journey of being excited for leaving for college with your boyfriend and best friend and the little bumps that happen along the way called life.

We start with Lilly, her best friend Lauren, and Lilly’s boyfriend Sander all leaving for college.  They all have been best friends for as long as Lilly can remember.   Her boyfriend Sander and her have been together for since high school and she is looking for having this time away from their parents and experiencing college together.  They are the perfect couple, they have dreamed and talked about how life will work out for them.  They are in for the long haul and college is just the first stop in their life together.  Until Lilly meets Sander’s roommate Bryan.  As soon as Lilly meets him she sees a change in Sander that is not for the good.  She just chalks it up to meeting new friends and being a guy thing.  On their first night out they decide to venture to a Frat party that Bryan’s friends are hosting.  Lilly, Lauren and Sander all get separated and feeling defeated that she cannot find anyone she decides to leave and go back to the dorm.

On the way back, she stumbles across a group of friends that invite her to another party.  Being that it is her first night away at college, she decides to hell with it and goes with them.  Little does she know this new group of friends will change everything.  At the new party, she is instantly drawn to the uber sexy full of tattoos bad boy Colton.  She has a boyfriend but she cannot stop her attraction to him. He is so different than Sander who is the clean cut pretty boy.   They become friends but she feels this deep down connection to him that is so different than what she knows with Sander.

“There’s something absolutely terrifying about that realization… the realization that someone can take over my thoughts so completely, that someone can snatch up a place in my heart before I even know his name.”

Lilly soon discovers college has a way of changing people.  It seems like everyone she thought she knew is now someone different.  Lauren her best friend and roommate is never around, she has become a heavy drinker and party girl and becomes distant from Lilly.  Sander and Lilly seem to have opposite class schedules and hardly have time for each other.  He also seems like he is changing and is not the same Sander she knows and loves.

Since meeting her new group of friends, she has been spending more time with them.  Being around and spending time with Colton awakens a fire inside Lilly she never knew was there.  She knows she loves Sander and plans to spend the rest of her life with him but there is something about Colton that make her feel alive that she never got with Sander.

“Any man lucky enough to kiss you should treasure it. He should take that gift and lock it way so tightly that no other man can get anywhere near you.  He should do everything in his power to make sure no one else gets to take the sweetness of you”

“If you ever let me kiss you, I’d make sure you’d never want to kiss another man again.  I’d make sure you’d never even think of another man again.”

It seems like she’s living a double life with two sets of friends.  When they come together, secrets are exposed that will force Lilly to take sides.   It causes Lilly to struggle with what she feels in her heart and what she thinks is right for her to do.  When she thinks she’s made the right decisions, more secrets come out the crumble her existence.  It had me shaking my head!!  I had a feeling that this secret was brewing but wasn’t quite sure.  When the dust clears Lilly is left to examine herself and who thought she could trust.

It’s a wonderful story about love, heartbreak, lies, secrets, and betrayal that had me turning the pages and wanting more! My heart broke from Lilly and I wanted her to have the HEA she so deserves!  I myself never went away for college so I love these types of stories of growth and figuring out life as you go along the way.  I so cannot wait to see what else the author has in store for us as this was a great debut novel!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Bayli Lane didn’t realize how much she loved creating a world from nothing until college. She went to Marian University where she majored in Communications but in her spare time wrote and read. Her love for reading is what really brought out her desire to create her own novel. After starting loads of stories and not finishing them, she finally decided it was time to put her passion to work. Becoming More is her first novel but certainly not her last. Bayli lives with her husband, Tim, in Indiana where she is probably sitting with a large cup of coffee and her computer working on her next book.
