Blog Tour: Review of Rotten by JL Brooks

Growing up on the outskirts of Las Vegas as the daughter of notorious strip club owner, Stephen Knox, and a mother who abandoned her at birth, life was less than kind to a young Antoinette.

After a failed teenage suicide attempt, Toni hit the road in search of a life free of undeserved cruelty and any resemblance to her past.

Years later, Toni is lost in a dead end marriage and makes a painful confession that sends her back to the one place she always wanted to escape. But can she really right the wrongs that haunt her? Toni soon finds that the only place where things stay the same is in your mind.

When her path crosses with David Stark, childhood playmate turned one night stand, she cannot deny the spike in temperature she feels every time he's near or the scorching dreams that flood her at night.

Digging through the years of heartache, Toni soon finds herself torn between the man she is committed to and the one who has always held her heart. As each layer unfolds before her, she discovers the root cause of her pain. Always believing the source was external, nothing could prepare her for the truth.

Melanie says:

I was committed to a man who wanted nothing to do with me, and I desired a man who wanted nothing to do with commitment. Whatever choice I made stood to destroy me.  - Toni

Toni grew up being bullied and looked down upon because her Dad owned a local strip club outside of Las Vegas.  Her only true friend was David but even he betrayed her by telling her to keep it a secret that he took her virginity. The next day she tried to commit suicide only to have David save her life. As soon as she was able, she left Nevada for Indianapolis and never came back.

Toni is a successful psychologist and married to a man she hadn't been intimate with in four years. Her spirit is broken but is still faithful to her husband. When she received a call telling her that her father was in a coma, she went back to her hometown and the demons that still haunted her.

Without love and care, we wither away, breaking down until these bodies become uninhabitable. Yet with love, companionship and diligence, we thrive. - Toni

This book was a little strange. Toni and David would kiss, sleep in the same bed, mess around, and tell each other 'I love you"  but I never really felt the emotion behind it. It was a good story line and it kept me interested in turning the page to see what happened next.  The main charters never really sat down and put all of their feelings on the table, but I guess that is more realistic than most books that just tell us what we want to hear.

I knew I shouldn't be here, but I was. Nothing had conspired between us, but the tension was there. Years of pent-up emotions were finally allowed to surface, leaking slowly from the top. I loved this man with all of my being. I couldn't confess it, but it was engrained in my soul. He was the first man I ever loved, and probably always would love. Before me laid my heart's desire, caught in a deep slumber in my arms. If only all of life could be this perfect, my broken heart might actually mend. - Toni
