I can summarize my overall reaction to Song of the Fireflies by J.A. Redmerski in two words: shock and awe. This novel from start to finish captivated me. My heart shattered and mended only to shatter again. I feel utterly ruined by this extreme book hangover.
For fans of The Edge of Never Series, these characters are such a contrast to the author’s original duo, Andrew and Camryn. Elias and Brayelle (Bray) have been inseparable since childhood. After a series of unfortunate mishaps, they find themselves fleeing their old lives and scrambling to stay one step ahead. Their connection is one of pure, undiluted love. It was interesting to see how their relationship tiptoed the lines between heartwarming devotion and heartbreaking dependence. Nevertheless, I was invested in these characters, their story, and the struggles toward a happy ending.
I was absolutely blown away by the dynamics of this story. This plot is anything but tame and boring. Song of theFireflies is nothing short of chaos. Bray and Elias endure some of the most challenging obstacles, which test their relationship and selves. As the story’s drama seemed to taper off and the characters were establishing stability, another unexpected twist would crumble their already weak foundations. It was unnerving and addicting. I loved every word from beginning to end.
If you’re looking to be destroyed by drama and angst only to be restored with a picturesque ending, Song of the Firefliesby J.A. Redmerski is the perfect book. It’s a roller coaster read, and I thoroughly enjoyed every last bit of anxiety and hope I felt during the ride.
