Captive, the second novel in Brenda Rothert’s Fire on Ice Series, is a stunning read full of heartbreak and hope. I fell in love with Jason Ryker and Kate Camden (now Kate Ryker) in Bound and was beyond giddy to continue their story in this book.
Each character comes from a past marred by tragedy and loss, but they have learned to cope with their grief and move forward with each other. Their future is bright and full of promise, but their happiness is tested early in their newlywed marriage. It was breathtaking and heart aching to watch these characters be challenged by obstacles ultimately out of their control. Will they succumb to the pressure and watch their marriage crumble? Or will they find strength within themselves and through each other to continue their happily ever after?
Ryke and Kate must learn to once again cope with their demons together but also in their own way. I found their relationship dynamic and coping mechanisms to be realistic. Women who can relate to Kate’s situation will find her journey soothing and therapeutic. Each character struggled separately and had to find closure within them before they could find comfort in each other. The pain and emotions saturated each page and permeated my heart. I was emotionally broken alongside Kate. I was weighed down by Jason’s uncertainty. I was consumed by this story from beginning to end.
Fans of Brenda Rothert’s Fire on Ice Series are going to embrace the emotional roller coaster and devour Capitve. If you haven’t discovered this phenomenal story, immerse yourself in Bound and Captive. They’re both five-star, must read novels that will shatter your heart and piece it back together just in time for a happily ever after.
