West. West, West, West. West hasn't had an easy life. He grew up in a rundown trailer with his mom and little sister, Frankie. His father is a loser and comes in and out of their lives. Before he left for college, he was raising Frankie. He got her ready for bed, tucked her in, made sure she had food and had her homework done. They move into his Bo's (mom's boyfriend) house while one of the times his dad disappears and West feels as though it is time to do something for himself since his sister is being taken care of with Bo around, so he drives across the country to go to Putnam College.
I'm sick of fucking worrying about her all of the time. That's the worst part about Caroline - the endless nagging worry of her. It was bad enough last year, when I met her and fell for her and swore to myself I'd never touch her again, all in the same day. The problem with Caroline isn't that I want her. The problem is that I want to help her, want to learnher, want to fix her, and I can't do that. I can't get caught up with her, or she'll distract me and I'll wreck everything. I can't give in to this, because the worst thing about Caroline is that I've never promised her anything, but she's here, anyway. It's as if she knows. She doesn't know. She can't. She can't know that when I make a promise, I keep it. Or that I'm afraid if I start promising her things, I won't ever be able to quit. - West
This book was so well written and made me just, feel. I can't believe that this is a debut novel! The end killed me. I was hoping, praying that it wouldn't end that way but I think I knew better. But somehow, even though it made me full-on-ugly cry, the ending worked. Caroline needs to solidify who she is and how incredibly strong she is. West needs to realize that he can't save everyone. That he needs to put himself first for a little while.
The story doesn't end with a cliffhanger, but it is far from over. Book two comes out in July and I have no idea how I will wait that long. I want it now. NOW.
I loved, loved, LOVED Deeper and is now and will always be one of my all-time favorites.
