Blog Tour: Review of Deeper by Robin York

In this New Adult debut by Robin York, a college student is attacked online and must restore her name—and stay clear of a guy who’s wrong for her, but feels so right.

When Caroline Piasecki’s ex-boyfriend posts their sex pictures on the Internet, it destroys her reputation as a nice college girl. Suddenly her once-promising future doesn’t look so bright. Caroline tries to make the pictures disappear, hoping time will bury her shame. Then a guy she barely knows rises to her defense and punches her ex to the ground.

West Leavitt is the last person Caroline needs in her life. Everyone knows he’s shady. Still, Caroline is drawn to his confidence and swagger—even after promising her dad she’ll keep her distance. On late, sleepless nights, Caroline starts wandering into the bakery where West works.

They hang out, they talk, they listen. Though Caroline and West tell each other they’re “just friends,” their feelings intensify until it becomes impossible to pretend. The more complicated her relationship with West gets, the harder Caroline has to struggle to discover what she wants for herself—and the easier it becomes to find the courage she needs to fight back against the people who would judge her.

When all seems lost, sometimes the only place to go is deeper.

Advance praise for Deeper

“Beautifully written and full of swoony tender moments, toe-curling chemistry, and delicious, twisty angst . . . Stop whatever you’re doing and read this book.”—Christina Lauren, author of the Beautiful Bastard series

Melanie says...

What is you go after the love of your life and it ruins you? What if you don't, and you figure out you're already ruined? - West

I don't know where to begin. This book will stay with me for a while. I had my heart broken, felt betrayal and lust, witnessed ugliness and compassion, embraced hope, fell in love, understood hatred and the pull of revenge. But most of all I got to see a broken, lost girl find herself to become stronger than anyone could have imagined. This book is about Caroline and West. Two people who fight with all that they had to stay away from each other, only to succumb to the inevitable pull to be near each other.

... he turns his head and kisses my jaw, openmouthed. It's like satin. Like lightening. I don't know what it's like. I do know that it's not what's supposed to be happening at all. Except that the atmosphere West is creating makes me feel like this is what's supposed to be happening. Exactly this. The West menace is, like, sex in aerosol form. He's making it with his body, and then he's putting it all over me. - Caroline

Caroline has had a pretty nice life. She is the youngest of three daughters being raised by her father who is a Judge. She is Daddy's little girl and she is held high on a pedestal. Caroline and her boyfriend Nate had been together for three years. They got together in high school and went to the same college. When she realizes that they are drifting apart, she decides to break-up with him, but Nate wants revenge. While they were intimate Nate had taken some pictures of Caroline in sexual situations and he posts them online along with her name, college, email address and phone number. Everyone at school has seen the pictures. Everyone knows. Instead of people blaming Nate, they blame her. And she blames herself.

Got what you deserved, didn't you? Slut. It was them. The men. They follow me around. Their voices. Their vile opinions, now an endless stream of negative color commentary on my life. I'd still fuck her, they say when I turn on the tap, Fuck that bitch until she walks funny. I don't care about her face.

... but I am hurt, Inside me, under my rib cage, hiding somewhere deep beneath my lungs, there's raw, sliced-open flesh that won't close up. It hurts all the time. - Caroline

West. West, West, West. West hasn't had an easy life. He grew up in a rundown trailer with his mom and little sister, Frankie. His father is a loser and comes in and out of their lives. Before he left for college, he was raising Frankie. He got her ready for bed, tucked her in, made sure she had food and had her homework done. They move into his Bo's (mom's boyfriend) house while one of the times his dad disappears and West feels as though it is time to do something for himself since his sister is being taken care of with Bo around, so he drives across the country to go to Putnam College.

I'm sick of fucking worrying about her all of the time. That's the worst part about Caroline - the endless nagging worry of her. It was bad enough last year, when I met her and fell for her and swore to myself I'd never touch her again, all in the same day. The problem with Caroline isn't that I want her. The problem is that I want to help her, want to learnher, want to fix her, and I can't do that. I can't get caught up with her, or she'll distract me and I'll wreck everything. I can't give in to this, because the worst thing about Caroline is that I've never promised her anything, but she's here, anyway. It's as if she knows. She doesn't know. She can't. She can't know that when I make a promise, I keep it. Or that I'm afraid if I start promising her things, I won't ever be able to quit. - West

This book was so well written and made me just, feel. I can't believe that this is a debut novel! The end killed me. I was hoping, praying that it wouldn't end that way but I think I knew better. But somehow, even though it made me full-on-ugly cry, the ending worked. Caroline needs to solidify who she is and how incredibly strong she is. West needs to realize that he can't save everyone. That he needs to put himself first for a little while.

The story doesn't end with a cliffhanger, but it is far from over. Book two comes out in July and I have no idea how I will wait that long. I want it now. NOW.

I loved, loved, LOVED Deeper and is now and will always be one of my all-time favorites.

5 Stars!!!!!
