Synopsis

ROCK STAR? RECOVERING ADDICT? MURDERER?
Yeah, they all hold true.
How can you explain to someone what it's like not to care? Not about yourself or the person standing next to you. I've lost that, the ability to feel and show affection.
I DO, HOWEVER, HAVE A HEART.
Sometimes, when I chase the dragon, it thunders through my head like a drum, reminding me it still beats.
It's still there.
HOLLOW. EMPTY. WASTED.
My agent says I have one more shot. A single, solitary chance to stay in the music biz, but there is one massive problem.
HER. SYN LANDRY.

Nicole Reed did an amazing job with this book. This story follows Rhye Clark from the Ruining series. His band the Mavericks was at the top of the charts and a year after hitting it big everything took a horrible turn. Rhye turned to drugs to cope with all the bad things happening in his life. He has spent time in and out of rehab for the last two years. He has been given one more chance by his label to get his act together.  They send him to Nashville to work with some of the best in the business to put out a new album. There are a few rules though that he is not happy with. He must live in an apartment with a life coach who watches over him, must obey a curfew and is subject to random drug tests.

"Who wants to live this life sober when the alternative makes you feel abso-fucking-lutely nothing?"

Syn Landry is a 19 year old country star who is trying to get over a broken heart. She is back in the studio in Nashville working on a new album.  Her and Rhye end up working together in the same studio. She sees a different side of Rhye when he is singing that he doesn't want anyone to see. He keeps pushing Syn away but she isn't going to give up on him without a fight.

Rhys struggles with letting go and moving on from some of the horrible things that happened in his past that he blames himself for. Syn tries to convince him that in order to move on he needs to let go of his past and stop blaming himself.  She finds the one person that she thinks will be able to help him. Jay the one girl that he has never been able to let go of.

She brings him to Jay's house in hopes that it will help him to stop feeling guilty for the things he had no control over. Jay is able to convince him that the things that happened in the past are not his fault and he needs to let go of his guilt and move on.

Syn and Rhys go through many ups and downs throughout the story but she continues to stand by him even when he tries to push her away. She knows it will be a life long struggle for Rhye but she is willing to help him any way she can. Syn's persistance finally makes Rhys believe that she loves him and is going to support him no matter where life takes them. This is a story about forgiveness, learning to trust, letting go and moving on.

Love. A four letter word. So beautiful in its spelling.  So simple in its arrangement.  So innocent in its meaning. So fragile in its time. So devastating in its aftermath.

When I saw that Nicole Reed was putting out a book for Rhye from Ruining Series I was so ecstatic!  Those books are some of my all-time favorites and I love it when we get to know the characters better.  So we last left Rhye and his band in LA about to make it big… fast forward a couple of years to the beginning of Wasted Heart.  This is told in an alternating POV with both main characters.

Rhye Clark is and the boys have hit it big and just as fast as they rose, they fell hard and fast.  Sex, drugs, and rock and roll turned out to be a deadly combination and again Rhye feels like another death is his fault. Strung out on heroine the record label forces Rhye to get clean or they will drop him from the label.  He has a heavy sense of duty to support his mom so he agrees.  He’s off to Nashville to work on his music and get clean.  Little does he know he meets the one that will challenge him the most…

Syn Landry is the current sweetheart of the country music scene.  She is squeaky clean and innocent as they come.  She is the epitome of the good ole country girl.  She’s had one serious relationship that ended with a broken heart.

“Love.  A four letter word. So beautiful in its spelling. So simple in its arrangement. So innocent in its meaning So fragile in its time. So devastating in its aftermath.”

When she sees Rhye at the recording studio, she has an instant draw to him.  He is so opposite of her but yet she feels drawn to him.  When he sings, she feels the hurt and pain he buries and hides from the world. Except she sees it crystal clear.

“I don’t move, frozen within his gaze.  What this boy does to me.  My body naturally reacts to his, but its my emotions that I don’t understand.  I want to protect him, shelter him, right every wrong; however, the most confusing aspect is not only do I want to fix him, but I want to fix myself.  I want to be perfect for him, be what he needs.”

Can the rock and roll bad boy and the country sweetheart fit together? Can Syn help Rhye heal the old wounds that he carries?

“Syn doesn’t offer me empty words broken promises, or carless caresses.  It’s something I’ve never known: giving without getting back a single damn thing.  I don’t understand it, and I’m afraid I never will.”

“The heart he wanted everyone to believe was wasted captures me wholeheartedly.”

It’s a great additional to the Ruining Series and really enjoyed it.  We get a little glimpse of our old friends Jay and Kane!  I did feel that that I connected more with Ruining Me and Ruining You as those brought me to tears.  I thought this book was a good accompanying book to complete the series but didn’t feel that same connection.  I did enjoy it but in a different way than the others.  If you love a rocker story then this is for you.

I love angst….I thrive on it, but only the fictional kind. I adore a story that grips the reader from the beginning and doesn’t let go…EVER. I’m an avid reader who just recently discovered my love of writing. My favorite things in life include my three wild & crazy kids, Reese’s Pieces, and every genre of music. I reside in the Deep South.

Currently, I am writing a new adult/contemporary romance story that I can’t wait to share. I also plan to release Rhye’s story, Wasted Heart, in 2013.
