Mercurial and charming, Tate Larson is a rising author and playboy who has a different woman on his arm every night of the week. Focused on his work, Tate has no plans to settle down any time soon. That is until he meets his pretty new assistant, Piper Donovan.

Desperate to escape the promise of backwater living, Piper ditched her Alabama hometown and never looked back. That was almost two years ago. Now that she is out of a job and her bank account is running on fumes, she’s desperate to find a job, fast. She finds the break she is searching for when she lands a position at Bookish Temptations. A little dancing and a lot of drinks with the girls seem the perfect way to celebrate. After a brief but explosive encounter with a man she was never supposed to see again turns out to be the same man she will be bending over backwards to please, her every instinct tells her to run. But when running means leaving the life she has struggled so hard to create, Piper decides her only option is to continue working for the devastatingly sexy Tate Larson...even if it kills her.

Unable to deny their growing attraction, they struggle to keep their distance in a relationship that requires anything but.

Julie says:

That First Kiss is book two in the Night Calls series but it can be read as a standalone.  It involves different characters from book one.  However, I do recommend reading book one, Stranded, because it explains a few characters that are in That First Kiss.  I always enjoy learning about the different characters in a series.

Piper Donovan has been crushed by her lying and cheating boyfriend.  She decides she wants a change and flees from her home in Alabama to Chicago.  She wants to start a new life and she certainly does just that!!  She decides to go out on the town with her friends for the night.  While at the club, she has a hot encounter with a sexy stranger.

Tate Larson is a successful author and mega playboy.  He doesn’t do relationships after being cheated on by his former girlfriend.  So, when he gets a chance to have a tryst at the club, he is not going to turn it down.  Tate may play the field, but he refuses to kiss any woman.  Until ‘her’.  Once their night is over, he finds out he must have “that first kiss” and he’s hooked!!

“I knew when I laid eyes on you that you were something special.” – Tate

After that first night, Tate or Piper can’t forget their steamy night.  So, when Tate finds himself needing an assistant, little does he know that Piper was hired for the job.  After going through numerous assistants, he knows he can never work with her either.  He can’t get her out of his head and definitely knows he doesn’t want her in his heart.  But, Piper is not one to take no for an answer.  No matter how much he mouths off to her, she gives it right back in return.

As much as they try to fight it, they keep being drawn together.  And, I found myself being drawn more to this book.  Tate is sexy, smart, and every woman’s dream.  When one of them tries to get closer, the other runs.  I found it so amusing but it certainly kept me interested.

When Tate decides he wants to try, Piper pushes him even further away.  She doesn’t want the typical player and knows he can never be in a relationship.  But he is so persistent and the lengths he goes to is a dream to any woman.  But, will she believe him or is she just another conquest?

“I can’t imagine going a single day without you in my life.  You’re everything to me.” – Tate

Tate certainly had me swooning and their chemistry is HOT!!  I was hooked from the start of their relationship and was certainly not disappointed.  I give it 4 stars and look forward to reading more in this series.
