Blurb:

When your past controls your future, how do you move forward?

Velaney Wills knows about that all too well.

Weak, powerless, and fearing the one person who has hurt her the most…can she overcome the barriers to move forward?

Being saved by a muscled Godsend was never on her agenda, but when firefighter, Eric Reilley comes into her life unexpectedly, everything changes.

Velaney has never felt loved or cared for, and her past prevents her from letting anyone in. Eric manages to break down her walls—despite the repercussions that come for them afterwards.

They have an undeniable spark—something she has never felt before, but will it be enough? Can love overcome all obstacles? Can they save each other to protect their love or will her past shatter everything she never knew she needed…?

**Spark is for mature audiences only – strong language, explicit sexual content, and sexual abuse are apparent.**

Brooke Cumberland delivers another wonderful story in her latest novel, Spark!

This entire novel was more than just a girl meets guy and falls in love story. There were unexpected plot turns and shocking twists. I was hooked from the start and couldn’t put this novel down! I LOVED THIS STORY!

Velaney is a heroine that you can’t help but love. She’s stubborn yet vulnerable and someone that I want to be friends with in real life. She had a traumatic childhood, and has kept the nightmares from her past buried as well as she can. I loved watching Velaney’s character grow and find a sense of normalcy through her relationship with the absolutely delicious Eric.

Eric. Eric. Eric. He’s a firefighter. That alone should send off all kinds of hotness alarms. Jump into this story ASAP ladies! Eric is one sexy book boyfriend. How do Eric and Velaney meet? Only one of the best character introductions ever. Eric saves Velaney’s life when their apartment building catches fire. TOTAL SWOON MOMENT.

I really enjoyed Eric and Velaney’s relationship. I love how it started out as a friendship until the pair finally gave in to their “more than just friends” feelings. Their relationship was the positive and happy piece of the novel that helped balance out the heaviness of Velaney’s dark past.

As I got further into the story, the author did a fantastic job of illustrating just how much Velaney has overcome and how far towards closure and acceptance of her demons her character has progressed. I still hate her family for their role(s) in her struggles, but I love that the author could draw that hate out of me using her story.

Brooke did an amazing job of handling the sensitive subject matter of Velaney’s past. I cringed and gasped during the more shocking revelations, but overall I think it was written with poise and finesse and wasn’t played out just for the shock factor.

If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t read Spark, you definitely need to one-click it now! There is a small cliffhanger at the end, but Brooke Cumberland is a wicked fast writer. You won’t have to wait long before the next installment is published. I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book in this series!
